It will always be right, and if I were better, or even any good at all at mathematics, I would be able to explain why.

But I do know that it's a formula, and after one figures out a set of variables, it will always be correct. One variable is the 'two-digit' number part, which is then subtracted individually from itself. For example, the letter 'I' appears a number of times, so that formula may be either beginning with an odd number or an even, etc. etc.

And there can only be 100 combinations (0-99), so the field is somewhat limited. It's like those ones that have you subtracting your birthday from the current year and stuff.

Thus is the extent of my mathematical knowledge.

It is pretty cool, nonetheless.

It has the opportunity to give 100 different answers, and it don't know ahead of time what my number is.

It took me like 5 tries before I figured it out. ;) Whatever number you pick will always result in a multiple of nine after you subtract both digits. All of the multiples of nine have the same symbol supplied, so when you click on the button, it will always show you the symbol you picked. The symbols are always changed every time you do it.
