McAfee Sucks Dick

We use McAfee anti-virus in our corporate environment. Yesterday, someone's computer got hosed by their latest DAT file update. Of course, we didn't know at the time that McAfee had screwed the pooch on this update and just figgered the user was guilty of doing stupid shit and infecting their computer with a virus, as many other users have done in the company due to McAfee's shortcomings in protecting computers in the first place. Note to readers: If you have a choice, choose something besides McAfee. It is shit.
So anyway, after a couple tries at fixing this user's computer, the decision was made to reinstall the OS and all applications from scratch. Now that it has been rebuilt, we find that we didn't need to.

If you have this issue, here is a snippet of a fix someone posted in their blog. Follow the 'McAfee Fix' link for the whole thing:
McAfee Fix

1. get a copy of SCVHOST.EXE off of your original CD, or even from an unaffected system.

2. Download the McAfee DAT 5959 from: http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security_updates/dat.asp?region=us&segment=enterprise
.
.
.
12. Send hate-mail to McAfee for ruining your day.

Thanks, I hope this helped!
I agree with #12 wholeheartedly.

I will of course be totally disappointed if there are no "Blah blah MAC OS blah MAC OS blah blah blah MAC OS" comments. I will assume you didn't actually read to this point.

The one time (so far, knock on wood, never again) my 'puter got a virus, the geek guy said the virus actually targeted McA and got in that way.

That's a common scenario of viruses. The first thing they do is disable the AV stuff.

You ain't lyin' when you say McAfee is SHIT!!
I got a trojan on my new Dell in February. The "Full Security" program that I bought from McaFee with my new Dell (a three year deal)reportedit, but could not get rid of it. Every webpage in IE went to a "Security" website trying to sell me (of all things) a security program for 60 bucks! I went on McAfee's "live chat" feature where the idiot there had the gall to suggest that I pay $85.00 to get rid of the trojan. What the hell did I pay for when I bought the program? It's useless alright. You'd be better off with noting on your system. At least you wouldn't be out the money!

There are much better products out there for free. Like MalwareBytes, Spybot, AVG, ...

Private developers do a better job than McAfee.

Cactus Mark; get over yourself. You could equally be glad to have a PC without McCrappy installed. This is nothing to do with PC vs MAC, just one completely rat shit piece of software for the PC.

McAfee (or McCrappy as my fellow employees call it) is the worst AV software ever written. Avoid it like the plague. It is SLOW, BLOCKS LEGITIMATE ACTIONS (yes, my company was ground to a halt with the same McAfee update that thought Windows was a virus), FAILS TO STOP BAD ACTIONS, and is just generally retarded. If we ever have a problem on our network, we immediately suspect McAfee and 99.9% of the time we are right. If only our IT people (who all leave at 5pm) actually gave a shit about the productivity of their customers (us) instead of not being a minute late leaving work, we'd have a REAL A/V package. Instead we are stuck with the farken worst joke on the face of the earth. Avoid McCrappy like the plague!!!!

I doubt it will get any better with Intel taking it over too.
We always end up disabling it to just get shit to work.

This just happened to me, before I saw this post unfortunately. Had to do a complete OS re-install and lost all data. McAfee failed to spot my infected SVCHOST and malwarebytes couldn't remove it before the infector crashed a boot file. I'm not even sure how I get the viruses I do considering the only sites I visit are for university.

What a load of bull. I have heard ZoneAlarm is good so I'll end up looking into that after I re-download malwarebytes.
