Guts And Butts Lab

This is so fucking monumentally stupid, I can't even fathom the extent:

Health District notifies patients of potential exposure to hepatitis C urges testing for approximately 40,000 patients

LAS VEGAS - The Southern Nevada Health District announced it is notifying approximately 40,000 patients of a local medical clinic about potential exposure to hepatitis C following an investigation of several acute cases of the illness.
[...]

The joint investigation identified the re-use of syringes (not needles) and the use of single dose vials of anesthesia medication on multiple patients as the potential sources of contamination.
[...]
Good gawd. It would seem that something like this would be discussed in medical school, maybe in a course called "How To Not Kill People - 101".

My understanding according to another article I read was that the employees were told to reuse those syringes. Personally, I would have questioned it. But then, what do I know? I'm a computer nerd with no medical training.

There is a class action suit already in the works, of course. (Jeebus. Can you imagine the number of lawyers circling the skies above that clinic?) But if a patient finds out they are infected, what's a good sum of money to expect as a settlement in exchange for your life, or at least a good portion of it?

So far, they're asking $10,000 apiece. I would think it would be more, but maybe if they try to extend too much, they'll just get stiffed. You can bet the doctors, the clinic, everyone involved will just file bankruptcy and close the doors anyway.

Okay, what rhymes with Kyrgyzstan?

Wed Feb 27, 9:29 AM ET

BISHKEK (Reuters) - Kyrgyz rights activists will offer a prize of up to $1,000 in a contest for the 'best song' to protest against the presence of U.S. troops in the Central Asian republic, the event's organizer said.

How about "Fuck You-gyzstan"? Or maybe "Go Fuck Yourself-yzstan"?

They're pissed because we've had an airbase there since 2001. I say, tough shit. Deal with it.

From The "No Shit" Files

I stole this from GUY K. I can't copy his source because the link he posted doesn't seem to work. But one way or another, the sentiment is definitely true:

Edit: The link seems to work now.

Right to Health Care?

The assertion that everyone has an absolute right to health care leaves unanswered the question: "Who will pay?" The assumption is that taxpayers will. Suppose a different answer were suggested. Since most doctors make a comfortable living, suppose the government were to require physicians, as a condition of practicing medicine, to provide health care to the poor at no charge.

This would amount to forced labor and members of the American Medical Association would be rightly horrified at the prospect. Yet requiring taxpayers to foot the bill for the poor is no different than forcing physicians to work without pay. Forced labor spread out over a large population and disguised through a system of taxation is still forced labor.

Philosopher Ayn Rand argued that the purpose of an individual's life is not to serve God, the government or one's neighbor. Rather, the purpose of life is one's own happiness, which is secured through productive achievement and by engaging in voluntary, mutually-beneficial relationships with others. A necessary condition for the pursuit of happiness is the recognition and protection of the right to property:

The right to life is the source of all rights--and the right to property is their only implementation. Without property rights, no other rights are possible. Since man has to sustain his life by his own effort, the man who has no right to the product of his effort has no means to sustain his life. The man who produces while others dispose of his product, is a slave.
Don't just say doctors here. Add to the list hospitals, nurses, drug companies, ambulance companies, pharmacists, ... you get the picture. Everyone in the medical field would have to work so many hours a week - put in their free time - in order to provide care to people who can't or won't buy insurance.

Well, anyone with any brains whatsoever knows this ain't going to happen. All of the above are in it for the money. If there is no money in it, they will quit the business. If they're forced by the government to provide services, well, you can imagine the sort of care you would receive under those circumstances. So the only other option is to tax the fuck out of everyone, or - wait a minute, I'm getting a flash... Hey! Here's a thought: Deny the service! If I get a flat tire and don't have the money to fix it, should the tire shop fix it for free? Should the wrecker come and tow it to the tire shop for free? Should I expect some random stranger like YOU for the money to fix it?

I need my truck to get to work after all. Someone better to pay for it, DAMMIT!

Where's The Outrage?

This isn't intended to be a racist post by any stretch. It is however a grumble about the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

You all probably didn't hear about this on the news, but a week or so ago, there was a drive-by shooting in town and a high school kid was killed:
[...]
Las Vegas police said the boy was walking with a group of students east along Alta Drive, just east of Pavilion Center Drive, when four people in a four-door car pulled alongside them and fired several shots about 1:45 p.m.
[..]
This was a white boy walking home from school with his white friends, and the four people in the car were black. Had it been the other way around, I'm sure Al and Jesse would have been all over it like files on shit.

I guess it didn't suit their agenda.

What An Idiot

This has to be the most assanine editorial I have ever read:
Letter to the Editor: Where are the responsible gun owners?

By ALFRED BROCK
Wayne, Mich.

Editor,

After some fruitcake murders his family with a gun or slaughters innocent students at some school with a gun we always seem to hear from the NRA about how guns are good.

The National Rifle Association puts out the argument that guns protect people. They seem to tell us that gun owners have magical powers and can protect us all.

Well - why don’t they?

When was the last time you heard a hero story about some gun owners mowing down a few drug dealers?

We usually hear about drug dealers mowing down children - as if murdering children with drugs wasn’t enough.

But where are the gun toting hero-warriors we hear about?

The NRA says they are law abiding citizens and that the gun owners aren’t the ones firing weapons into our homes, our cars, our businesses and in our streets.

The other day I was in a Walmart and saw a 10 or 11 year old boy walking around with a 45 caliber pistol in his pants.

He ran out of the store - right in front of police officers and security guards.

It’s not a lawful nation that allows half-fed and uneducated children to run around with guns.

The next day a gas station attendant was shot in the neck over $25.

Where were the NRA heroes then?

The only people the NRA helps carry guns, sell drugs, and kill innocent people.
I am ashamed to say this is from my hometown newspaper. However, the idiot who wrote it obviously isn't a resident of that town. In fact, I don't think he is even a resident of this planet. It would appear his reality is nowhere close to the reality of most intelligent or logical people.

This will be a rather tame post for me, as I intend to use the same reply to the editor of the paper.

This scathing rant by an apparently demented individual is based solely on some sort of hot-headed finger pointing - albeit in the wrong direction, concocted in an attempt to produce another black mark in the eyes of the public against responsible citizens and gun owners. And throwing the NRA into the mix is a feeble attempt to cast blame upon a group of individuals who had absolutely nothing to do with the sick people who perform these actions. When was the last time anyone has heard of an NRA member going nuts and firing at a group of innocent people?
The NRA promotes safe and responsible gun ownership. It does not promote possession of firearms illegally, or by people who have no business having them.

The mentally blind scribe of the letter fails to mention that Virginia Tech, Northern Illinois University, the Omaha mall, even Columbine high school are "gun free" zones. This means that responsible, law-abiding gun owners were forbidden to possess firearms anywhere on the property of these places. Had they been able to, chances are there wouldn't have been near the loss of life that there was.

As an example, the volunteer security guard on duty at the church in Colorado Springs did have a weapon in her possession and was able to slow down, if not stop the gunman before he was able to take the lives of an unknown number of other victims.

There are many people who would like nothing more than to 'mow down' a few drug dealers, psychos and miscreants. These people are also responsible enough to not take the law into their own hands. Responsible gun owners use weapons to defend their lives, their loved ones and when necessary, their property. They know that they are only to use their weapons legally for hunting or for self defense, not for hunting down other people who - like them - are under the protection of the same laws. As much as some good people would like to stop illegal and deadly activities before they start, they also realize they are not law enforcement personnel or vigilantes.

It's too bad that people like Mr. Brock think the way they do. They think that somehow the gun is responsible for the deaths of these people. They fail to take into consideration that it is the person firing the weapon that is solely responsible.
Had these killers not used a gun, chances are they could or would have found some other means of performing these deadly acts. There have been arsonists, bomb makers, cars driving into crowds, hijackers, polluters and so on. You name a way to kill innocent people and someone has probably already thought of it. And possession of a gun wasn't a requirement.

Very Mundane Post

So I'm sitting here at the computer and have an itch on my leg. I pull up my pantleg to scratch said itch, and out falls a - whad'dya call it - a dryer sheet.
You know, the thing people toss in with clothes to make them all soft and lovely smelling.

Well, me being the resourceful feller that I am take the thing and wipe the dust off my monitor.

Did you know that used dryer sheets make very good anti-static duster wipes?

You're very welcome.

HEY YOU GUYYYYS!

Over here! Hey! You presidential candidates! Yeah you!

Ahem. Um, yeah. Thank you. Now that I have your attention, I would like to ask a question or two.
I know, you've been busy stumping and all, but that's really what I wanted to talk to you about. Your issues and rhetoric.

See, I've been hearing all this stuff about your plans to fix things, but I've sorta been wondering what you plan on doing for me. Maybe I'm just being a bit selfish, but since I'll be voting this fall, I would sort of like to know who to vote for. Maybe you could take a minute and clear up a couple things for me.

You see, I hear you say you're going to 'fix' the medical insurance problems. For instance, people who can't afford insurance are going to have insurance shoved down their throat provided for them. But what I would like to know is since I already have insurance that costs me - forgive me here - an arm and a leg, what good does your promise to provide insurance to the uninsured do me? It seems to me that companies will only raise my rate even more to cover people who don't have insurance, or you will want me to pay for their insurance out of another pocket such as property tax or something. I don't hear anything from you where you are working on the root causes of skyrocketing insurance rates, or giving me any sort of break or relief for providing my own insurance as I have done for years.

Which brings me to who is uninsured...

See, you've been talking about what you're going to do for wetbacks illegal aliens, migrant workers, whatever you want to call them. How they'll be assimilated, pardoned, whatever. Well, I think that maybe if we didn't have to care for so many people who - maybe you should sit down for this - are in this country ILLEGALLY, as in THEY'RE BREAKING THE LAW BY BEING HERE!!! Why are we pandering to them. Free medical treatment, public schooling, "Press 1 to continue", ...
Shouldn't we be dealing with them like other people who break the law? Shouldn't we arrest them, maybe even - gasp - deport them for theft? Tax evasion? Make sure they don't come back to take advantage of our good will?
See, I was born and raised here and maybe I just don't understand all their troubles, but I have paid taxes on my wages for 30-odd years and property taxes for about 18 years. Why should I have to pay income and taxes when they don't?
I understand that taxes are a necessary evil, but I also think I should only have to pay my share and not other peoples' too.

Which brings me to the property taxes...

I pay property tax in two states. A fairly large chunk of my property tax is for indigent care. You know what indigent care is, right? If not, it's money I pay the county to cover welfare recipients and illegal aliens when they need to go to the hospital because - woops! They don't have medical insurance!

Another big chunk of my property taxes go to public schools. I don't have kids in the public school system. Never have. Yet, like I mentioned above, I pay taxes in two states for public schools and libraries. Hell, I haven't even set foot in a library in oh, say 20 years. Thanks to Al Gore, I have an internet I can pretty much look anything up I need to know.
Now I don't mind helping out here, as long as I am being treated fairly about it. But since I have paid into these systems, you people have my number. You seem to think you can squeeze a little more out of me.
Nice. I pay for other people's kids to go to school and learn how everyone is an equal and no one is better than anyone else, how you don't have to win because there are no losers, and how if you screw up you can't be punished for it because daddy will sue.

Well, I don't want to bore you too bad, but see, I guess my point here is that I hear what you want to help out school kids, wetbacks illegal aliens, fags homosexuals, unborn babies, welfare recipients, stem cells, third world countries, convicts, ... to name a few groups. But I haven't heard anything that makes me think "Hey! I'm employed, I'm a citizen, I have insurance, I pay taxes, I pay for someone's college. And look! That person is also interested in me! They want my vote, because they're going to ... uh, I don't know. I don't have a clue. They haven't said what they want to do for me."
All I hear is what you are going to do to provide for people or what you're going to to take from me to provide for others, but I haven't heard about anything I'm getting out of it except for a pocket full of fingers going for my wallet.

Fidel Castro retires
Reuters - 2 hours, 35 minutes ago

HAVANA (Reuters) - Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro said on Tuesday that he will not return to lead the communist country, retiring as president 49 years after he seized power in a revolution and became a central figure of the Cold War.
[...]
I wonder what is in store for that country now? This is a major ordeal. No telling though, whoever takes over may be a bigger asshole. But with any luck, not.
Could be a good day for Cuban wetbacks. Maybe they'll all go home and make me some cigars, since we may be able to import them now.

Via email:
Where Did The White Man Go Wrong?

Indian Chief, "Two Eagles," was asked by a white government official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done."

The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"

The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. "When white man find land, Indians running it. No taxes, No debt, Plenty buffalo, Plenty beaver, Clean Water; Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; All night having sex."

Then the chief leaned back and smiled. "Only white man dumb enough to think he can improve system like that.
Well, he does have a point.
