Radio jock Imus suspended for two weeks

By Arthur Spiegelman 1 hour, 12 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Shock jock Don Imus, who has made a career out of outrageous comments, was suspended on Monday for making racist remarks by both the radio and television networks that carry his program.

CBS Radio and MSNBC, which broadcasts the radio show on television, suspended Imus for two weeks for saying the mostly black Rutgers University women's basketball team looked like a bunch of "nappy-headed hos."
[...]
The two main arguments I've heard are:
  1. "CSB/MSNBC hired him knowing what he is like, so they shouldn't be penalizing him for doing what he does."
  2. "He said a racist thing and should be fired immediately."
The way I see it, is if those words were part of on of the many rap "songs" on the market, he would have a hit record on his hands. Especially if he was black.
Fucking shit.

Lyrics in rap songs are more derogatory than anything to ever the radio and teevee airwaves, but yet those are not only totally acceptable, but they're worth a fucking fortune.

You don't see Al Sharpton clouding up and raining all over rappers asses.

I am intimately involved with one of Imus's relatives. Trust me, that brake that most of us have installed between the brain and the mouth? none of them have it.

Well, yeah. But the point is, others say a ton of shit at least as bad (Stern), but they're not held near as accountable as Imus.
Even if he is a big mouthed bigot.

double standard among the AL Sharptons and Jessie jacksons of the country. I am no Imus fan for sure but I do defend his right to say whatever the hell he wants to say..and will continue to do so until the PC left wing crowd destroys the first amendment..there ain't no RIGHT
NOT to be insulted.

There may be grounds for a tort case..but then if Imus can prove in fact they are nappy headed hos....?

Fat chance, but it would be entertaining!

I do not disagree with him, or you.

Nappy Headed Ho's... *SNORT!* what really cracks me up is not very many of us on the West Coast would ever have known about it if the lefties hadn't made such a big deal out of it.

I do believe you're right there. I never would have known. Especially since I don't - have never - watched his show.

"That brake...between the brain and the mouth." BWAH! I'll bet you remain entertained if nothing else.

I agree with everything Guy said, and I've been listening to Imus on again off again for the better part of my 31 years (because of my dad, who used to listen to him on 66 DubyaNnnnnBeeeeeCeeeee), but having followed this latest controversy (::yawn::), I have to say that I was mega turned-off with all his apologizing and ass-kissing to the peeps who ought take a good look at themselves and their own track records (Yeah, I'm talkin' to you, Mr. Hymietown!).

If that tweren't enough, he had Bill frickin' Maher on his show today in what quickly turned into a "Let's tell the world what we really think of Dubya and Cheney" orgy. It was disgraceful.

Soooo, that said, tonight when I get home I will be switching my clock radio back to FM, so I will be able to wake up tomorrow morning, and every morning thereafter, to the likes of Janis Joplin and The Who.

I really used to like Imus, but he's proven himself to be a real pussy.

Erica,
Yup. He caved.
One point made by another blogger I read (I forget which) was: We have freedom of speech, but we are also responsible for that speech.
Very true. But what did his bosses expect? They know him. They probably knew he was going to do something like that eventually. I say, big fucking deal. People are taking this shit waaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously. I'm guessing some if not all of that basketball team has called each other the same thing a time or two.

S.M.,
Exactly.

NBC took up the first 10-15 mins talking about this "tragedy" and did not mention the soldiers who were killed in Iraq yesterdy! Let the two bozos get offended over the rappers, then I might care!

BTW, did anyone apologize to the lacross players at Duke?

curmudgeon said...

Linda,
What? The charges are getting dropped. There's nothing to apologize for, right?

Of course not, being called names is much worse! I couldn't believe it when I heard one of the Bplayers say they were scarred for life! How stupid. And who did the Today Show have on to discuss this? Spike Lee and Whoopie! Stupidity on a roll! What kind of vile things did Whoopie say about the president? Too stupid for words!!

Exactly.

"Sticks and stones..." Blah blah blah.
