Kinda Gets You To Thinkin'

From The Washington Times:
Mexican mercenaries expand base into U.S.

A renegade band of Mexican military deserters, offering $50,000 bounties for the assassination of U.S. law-enforcement officers, has expanded its base of operations into the United States to protect loads of cocaine and marijuana being brought into America by Mexican smugglers, authorities said.

The deserters, known as the "Zetas," trained in the United States as an elite force of anti-drug commandos, but have since signed on as mercenaries for Mexican narcotics traffickers and have recruited an army of followers, many of whom are believed to be operating in Texas, Arizona, California and Florida.

Working mainly for the Gulf Cartel, one of Mexico's most dangerous drug-trafficking organizations, as many as 200 Zeta members are thought to be involved, including former Mexican federal, state and local police. They are suspected in more than 90 deaths of rival gang members and others, including police officers, in the past two years in a violent drug war to control U.S. smuggling routes.

Okay, this has gone way beyond "profiling". This is a legitimate and immediate threat to our security and to law enforcement lives. I for one, wouldn't want to be a cop or border patrol anywhere near there right now.
These people are trained soldiers - and by trained, I mean as well trained as our own soldiers who are trained for war. This isn't a group of minutemen or vigilantes, trying to shuffle or prevent shuffling of illegals across the border. These people are out to make sure their drugs make it to our streets with no interference by the law.

The simple soultion? If everyone was to quit using illegal drugs, it would be over.
Yeah, right. That'll happen when Michael Moore starts his diet.

It's time to start thinking a little more about border security. Not just keeping us safe from ragheads at the bus stop or airport either.

The 'War on Drugs' is truly a war. Like it or not. And it is hitting us right here at home.

Something to think about.

Wow - i agree this is a dangerous and immediate threat to law enforcement, which I don't like. But I can't sign on that the solution lies in "everyone quittng illegal drugs..." That sounds so naive to me. And before I go on, I want to point out that I don't do drugs... but I have.

I think legalizing is the only wy to go. Alcoholics are plenty dangerous, and that's a legal drugs which is busy ruining the lives of the drinkers, their families, and innocents. (that's probably a bad way to indrotuce my point, huh?) lol

People who have a void to fill are GOING TO DO DRUGS! Some may find alcohol, others may fall into something illegal. Addiction is the enemy, not the addict. The only reason alcoholics don't break into our homes, is because alcohol is legal, fairly cheap, and taxed.

It's the illegal factor that gets people desperate, trying to invent their own drugs... when EUREKA - crystal meth is born. The only way to take control of the international situation... the only way to take the power away from the cartels, is to legalize it... the renegads will go away, because it will no longer be worth billions to them. It may still be a billion dollar industry, but the profits will stay in the good ol' US of A. They are OUR addicts, part of OUR GNP, why should mexico profit!

A drug free world - as idealic as that sounds - just isn't going to happen. Sad but true. I really believe that legalization, combined with programns for those who want help with their addition, is a better way to go.

What do you think?
